CELEBRATE CAVE MONTH

To celebrate Cave Month at the MOST (Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology) in Syracuse, Howe Caverns Tour Manager Jeff DeGroff will join with MOST Exhibit Manager and Geologist Dr. Peter Plumley to present a program on the geology and formation of New York caves.

Mr. DeGroff is responsible for the maintenance, preservation and conservation of the Caverns. The Schoharie native has worked at Howe Caverns since 1969.

The special presentation, Caves and Caving, takes place starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, at the MOST. Part of the Museum’s Junior Café Scientifique, the program is open to students in grades 6-12 and their parents and is free with paid Museum admission. Pre-registration is urged by calling the MOST at 315-425-9068, Ext. 2121.

“The program also celebrates the recently opened, 3,000-square foot exhibit that features the Earth Science Discovery Cave,” said Howe Caverns General Manager Robert Holt. The $1 million exhibit features a limestone cave with dripping water and cool damp air -- just like Howe Caverns.

“The Caverns began working with the MOST last November, sharing images of the cave with them,” Mr.Holt said, adding: “This exhibit is exceptional in its depiction of New York’s underground worlds with Howe Caverns the largest cave open to the public in the northeast.”

Participants will learn about the rock type in which caves form and where you can find caves in New York. Exploring caves, a sport called spelunking, is popular in all areas of the world. Discussions will include safety, training, and what needs to be known to reduce the detrimental effect cavers can have on caves. The program is presented by the Techonology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY).

At the Bristol Imax Omnitheater® at the MOST, the movie “Journey into Amazing Caves” is playing throughout the month as part of the cave celebration.
