Meet Carole and John, from Orange, Massachusetts
Today while standing on our magical, glowing calcite heart, John asked Carole to marry him. And she said, yes!! It was a moment full of meaning, rooted in love, timing, and trust. What makes it even more special is what happened more than a month ago. John quietly and thoughtfully asked Carole’s daughter, Layla, for her mother’s hand in marriage. This isn’t just a proposal, it is the blending of two lives, two families, and the belief that love often finds us when we least expect it. Carole and John are building a life together with their blended family. Carole’s daughter, Layla (19), and John’s daughters, Millie (10) and Ivy (, have come together in a home filled with laughter, strength, and second chances. John, who turns 37 today (Happy Birthday, John!) was born and raised in Phillipston, Massachusetts. He grew up in a household of service. Throughout his youth, he watched his parents serve within his local fire department. On his 18th birthday, he followed in their footsteps and joined the department himself. Nineteen years later to the day, he’s now the full-time captain — leading with the same values that shaped his youth. Carole, who grew up with two younger sisters, credits her strength and heart to her grandmother, whose name she proudly carries. “The woman I am today is because of my grandmother,” she says. “She taught us that sticking together is immeasurable strength, and that family is everything. That’s etched into my soul.” Carole and John’s paths first crossed over 20 years ago when John’s sister dated Carole’s stepbrother. Back then, Carole saw John as the younger, immature guy at social gatherings, and family events. “He was just too young,” she laughs. “Though let’s be honest — he’s still a little immature… but in the fun way. He keeps us laughing. He keeps us young.” Some four years ago, John decided to reach out to Carole and he messaged her. That simple message would spark something neither of them expected — and would bring them back to the beginning in the most meaningful way. Their very first date as a couple was at Carole’s dad’s house — a casual swim that felt easy and natural. Today, they live and rent that very same house — a full-circle moment that holds deep significance for both of them. In August, they’ll celebrate four years together — and now, their engagement marks a beautiful new chapter. Today their story visited the past. Three years ago, on their very first vacation as a couple, they came to Howe Caverns. While visiting the Bridal Altar, they learned about the glowing calcite heart in the floor — and the legend that says it brings good fortune to couples who stand on it together. In a moment of playful teasing, in front of their tour group, John told Carole she’d “better not step on it.” He laughed at the time — but later, he carried the weight of that moment with him, wishing he had let it be something more magical. Today, he made it right. Standing on that very same calcite heart, he dropped to one knee and turned a memory into a milestone. Their message to the world, “Believe in second chances. Never say never. Whatever you think you’ve planned for your life — the universe might have something even better.” Thank you Carole and John for sharing this unforgettable moment with us at Howe Caverns today. We are honored to be a part of your love story. Thank you so much for visiting!
