Meet Taylor & Calvin from Western, New York

Their journey is one woven with resilience, rediscovery, and the enduring power of love. Taylor, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, grew up in a world of exploration and wonder. With a mother who soared through international skies as a flight attendant and a father who brought history to life as a Western Civilization teacher, Taylor describes her childhood as a grand adventure — one filled with travel, curiosity, and love. Her parents, who just celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary, instilled in her a spirit of adventure and the value of true partnership. After earning a degree in hospitality and working for Walt Disney World, Taylor’s path took a turn during the pandemic. She shifted into veterinary medicine, working as a vet tech for four years before returning to her first love — hospitality. Calvin, from Sheboygan, Michigan, shares a similar foundation of love and exploration. Raised by devoted parents and now with a younger brother serving in the Air Force, Calvin has seen much of the world — from Europe to Asia to Lake Tahoe, California. A graduate of Johnson & Wales, in Denver, with a culinary degree, Calvin once ran his own catering business and still enjoys catering local events during the holidays. Though he no longer works in the restaurant industry, his passion for the craft and creativity remains.

Calvin’s story is one of profound strength and perseverance. In 2014, while practicing motorcycle racing, Calvin suffered a devastating crash that changed everything. He was 30 years old when he woke up in a hospital with major brain trauma, unable to walk or talk. His recovery spanned nearly a decade, requiring him to relearn even life’s most basic functions. To this day, he lives with the aftermath of that injury, including seizures. Despite his setbacks, every morning, Calvin wakes up with gratitude — determined to live fully and to inspire others. His resilience is quiet but powerful, and his presence radiates calm, strength, and purpose. Fate brought Calvin and Taylor together. Taylor had recently moved New York with her then-fiancé, and Calvin had relocated to heal from his accident. Their connection started as a friendship at work, but soon Taylor realized something profound — this new friend, a man she barely knew, treated her with more compassion and understanding than the person she was engaged to. That realization sparked a brave decision to change her life and reclaim the love and respect she knew she deserved. She stepped away from her engagement and began building a life on her own. Taylor, strong and self-assured, eventually asked Calvin if they could spend time together. Calvin, showing deep empathy and respect, encouraged her to take time to heal. That one conversation revealed an essential part of this character to Taylor. At that moment she knew he was grounded, patient, and full of integrity. It confirmed for her that he was a man worth knowing. Their bond grew organically. They consider their first date, a “mini date.” Calvin took her on a tour of his childhood hometown. Their first official date? A romantic trip to Niagara Falls. Since then, they’ve kept the spark alive with mini dates and bigger monthly getaways, living out a shared commitment to continue exploring life — together. Their latest adventure brought them to Howe Caverns, thanks to a New York bucket list scratch-off gift that Taylor received from her mother years ago. It’s now become part of their tradition — scratching off a destination and turning it into a shared memory. What Calvin loves most about Taylor is her brilliant conversation and sense of humor. For Taylor, Calvin’s self-awareness, humility, and dedication to spiritual growth are what set him apart. Their message to the world is one we all need to hear: “We were all isolated for so long during the pandemic that we forgot how to be human with each other. Our society right now is not where we were 10 years ago. We all have differences, but we are still neighbors. We are all simply connected through humanity. Sometimes the way we treat each other feels as if we are no longer neighbors. So many of us are out here attacking each other. We really don’t know what each other’s stories are or what we’ve all been through individually. Can you really ask yourselves? Do you know how you can help serve your neighbor or those around you. Do you really know what your neighbor is battling, possibly in isolation? Our one common ground as human-beings is the want to love and be loved. Treat others how you want to be treated. Show kindness and compassion and less judgment. That’s truly what the world needs right now.” Taylor and Calvin, thank you for sharing your story and your hearts — and thank you for visiting Howe Caverns. We wish you many more beautiful adventures and a lifetime filled with laughter, healing, and love.
