Meet Yana from Manhattan

Betsy saw Yana outside the Main Lodge, enjoying the view. She was hesitant to speak when Betsy approached her and when she did speak, it was only to her father & brother in Slavic. She eventually warmed up to Betsy and said, “Today is my birthday.” Her 12th birthday, to be exact!

She told Betsy that she was waiting for her mother who was still on a cave tour. Her mom had missed her scheduled tour time because she received a phone call from family in Ukraine while waiting for the tour to depart. Betsy immediately noticed that talking about family in Ukraine and the war was a difficult topic for this family. Smiles quickly moved to expressions of concern when the subject was broached. Betsy lightened the mood with a little homemade fudge and multiple good birthday wishes. When Betsy asked Yana what she would tell the world she said, “Be happy!” Happiest of birthdays, beautiful Yana!
