Meet Carol and Colin from Spain

Meet Carol and Colin from Spain Their story began many years ago in Northern Ireland and England, where they grew up alongside their siblings. At the time they were coming of age, university was not the expected path it is today.

Colin moved to England when he was about 15, while his sister was only 12, and she still lives there today. Colin has two children of his own. Carol has a brother who lives in Boston, which is where they are visiting from. Carol has three children: a daughter who lives in Australia, a son in England, and another son in Belgium. Her brother moved to the United States about 27 years ago after meeting an American while working in the sailing industry, following in their father’s footsteps.

Carol and Colin met while working in the alcoholic beverage industry, where they both spent much of their professional lives. This is their first time visiting the area, after Caroline’s sister-in-law suggested stopping here on their way to Niagara Falls. At home in Spain, they live near several caves, including one that features an underground boat ride. Although they haven’t visited it yet, they are looking forward to comparing it to the caves here once they return home.

Carol noted that if it snowed more in Spain, their mountainous home would look very similar to Upstate New York. She added that many people assume Spain is all beaches, when in reality much of it is mountainous. Colin chimed in, explaining that they rarely get snow, mostly frost, and the last snowfall they experienced was in 2017. Both agreed that they do not miss home, as they now greatly enjoy traveling in retirement.

They shared a story about an airport delay that left them staying overnight in Reykjavik, Iceland, but joked that it was “not comparable” to the motel at Howe Caverns, praising our motel for having everything a traveler could need- including a goodie bag! They highly recommend that people visit Murcia’s city center in Spain at least once, describing it as both beautiful and informative.

Colin mentioned his interest in seeing Detroit from the Canadian side, while Carol laughed and said it is “not on my bucket list.” They chose not to ask questions about the cave, preferring to be pleasantly surprised. Their one piece of advice was simple but heartfelt: travel, see the world, and visit places that come recommended, just like Howe Caverns, and always listen to the locals! Thank you so much for visiting!
