Meet Carrie from Fultonham, New York
Meet Carrie from Fultonham, New York, an executive assistant at a local phone company, who stopped by with her husband and children for a spontaneous day trip. For her kids, it was their very first time exploring the caverns, an unforgettable experience they absolutely loved. For Carrie, this visit carried a much deeper significance. Her family has a long-standing connection to Howe Caverns. Her great-grandfather, Emmett Barber, once worked here as the property caretaker. The Barber name is also well known in the area through Barber Farms, a local fruit and vegetable stand.
Carrie shared a fascinating piece of family lore passed down through generations. During her great-great-grandfather’s time as caretaker here at Howe, there was reportedly a robbery, and the robber even locked him in the elevator! While the details have faded over time, the story remains a memorable part of her family’s history.
Her connection doesn’t end there. Growing up, Carrie’s mother frequently visited the caverns to see her grandfather, making this destination a cherished part of their family traditions. One of Carrie’s favorite personal memories dates back to her teenage years, when she attended a Halloween event in the cave. She still vividly remembers a staff member grabbing her ankle while walking through- a scare she’s never forgotten!
Carrie thinks that everyone should visit the cave because, “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
The one message she hoped to share is:
“Be kind to each other.” We’re honored to be part of Carrie’s story and grateful she shared such a special piece of her family history with us today. Thank you so much for visiting!
