Meet Lakota and Rory
Students at RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) – a private research university located in Troy, New York. It is the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world and is also the oldest in the Western Hemisphere! It was established in 1824 and is recognized as one of the world’s elite technological research universities. Lakota is from Pennsylvania and her focus is game design and communications. Rory is from California and his focus is computer science. Two years ago, the couple met while living in the same dorm. The dorm is located further from the main campus than the other dorms so the students tend to be more isolated. During her studies Lakota was struggling with her computer science class. She asked Rory to tutor her. During that time, they became close friends. Before the school year ended, Lakota told Rory that she was interested in more than just a friendship. Rory was in shock and unsure of what to say. He asked her if he could have some time to think that through. Six months went by and with no response from Rory, Lakota thought she had been “friend-zoned.” She felt rejected but respected Rory’s decision. However, Rory said, “One day it all just clicked.” He called her and from that moment on, they began a relationship together. For the both of them, this is their first serious relationship. When school is not in session, Rory returns to California and Lakota to Pennsylvania. This presents a challenge. The couple says, “Long distance relationships aren’t for the faint of heart but they are worth it. If you’re contemplating a long distance relationship, don’t allow for the fear of “what if”. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. It can help you explore the real depth of your relationship. We are constantly seeking new avenues to stay connected across the distance and time. It takes two very secure people to be able to maintain a relationship like this. Not having constant attention and validation on a daily basis is something that not everyone has the capacity to achieve. As long as you have a solid foundation of respect, friendship and trust, a long distance relationship is possible.” The couple shares the same adoration for each other. They said, “Our favorite thing about each other is that we are each other’s anchor in any storm. We balance each other well and can help each other navigate the rough waters of life because of that balance. You don’t have to sacrifice things that you love or spending time with people that you care about to be in a relationship. Balance is key. To be individuals and still be able to come together is the gift.” Thank you so much for visiting
