Meet Ramon from Cuba
He hails from the island Varadero which is renowned for being one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. He grew up living in a tiny one-room wooden house on the beach. The house was leaning to one side and had an outhouse. He spent his childhood barefoot, covered in saltwater and sand on the beach, fishing with his cousins. His immense love for the island is something that he carries in his heart. Immediately upon meeting him, he referred to himself as an “island boy.” In the 1960s, many of his family members started to immigrate from Cuba to the United States. He was 14 years old when he left the island and moved to the United States. Today he holds dual citizenship in Cuba and the United States. For the majority of his American life, he has lived in the islands off of the Florida Keys and in Miami. Ramon only recently moved to New York State. He has been in Upstate for approximately one year. This is his first full winter in upstate New York. He said, “Being able to experience all four seasons throughout the year is very storybook like. I’ve wait my whole life to see all four seasons.” His job as a coach driver for Trailways Transportation provides him the opportunity to travel and see much of the Northeast landscape. Ramon has always wanted to be a licensed pilot. Originally, his dream was to be in the US Air Force. Unfortunately, that opportunity passed him by when he was younger. The desire to fly has not. He still hopes to one day obtain his pilot license. He said, “It’s hard to beat a man who never gives up. If you put your mind to something you can achieve it. You’re never too old to have a new dream or set a new goal. If you have breath in your lungs you should keep working towards your dreams.” Thank you so much for visiting
